Dear Engaged Couples-
I officiated at a particularly memorable service last weekend. I am hoping that as you read this, you may begin to envision new possibilities for your own wedding. All you need is a groom and officiant open to new ideas, and your own creative leanings in the language arts.
The bride I married last Saturday (October 18th) is a dramatist—in other words, a director of dramas. She runs with a certain crowd, you know? And so it was second nature to her to work with me and her fiancé in putting together a service that employed the talents of her many artistic friends. Furthermore, since she is a connoisseur of the arts, she chose as readings for her wedding, those written by the greatest writer of them all—Shakespeare.
The first reading at the service was Sonnet 75. It’s all about young love—the being-in-love-with-love, kind of young love. The reader, an actor, read with gusto. Fine projection. That was followed by one act of the Shakespearean Comedy, As you Like It. The actors were incredibly talented and well-rehearsed. Yes, they used scripts, but just barely. I had the impression that in a pinch they COULD have performed off-book.
What a delight! But that is not all. The service was not pure entertainment. There was
a serious side, too. That’s where I came in. I added some words about the two of them, and the challenges that that particular couple faces. He’s a restaurateur, she’s a director; they are ships passing in the night; or two sprinters running in different directions on parallel tracks. They will need to find some together time in their married lives.

In my estimation, and I think the bride and groom will agree, working together we were able to achieve the perfect balance between entertainment and spirituality, between fun and frankness, between diversion and directness.
The couple is off on their honeymoon now, with many fond memories of a glorious wedding day. And I have fond memories, too!
