Did You learn as much from your classmates as you did from your teacher? |
Dear Engaged Couple—
Several months ago I was talking with a friend about the premarital counseling sessions I offer. The sessions are based on my years of counseling as a pastor, but also on a huge amount of reading, and on my own life experiences as a wife and mother. Still, as I spoke with my friend, I wondered out loud if there was more that I could do so that the couples I marry could get the absolute most out of premarital counseling. My friend had this to say, “My wife and I actually participated in a pre-marital counseling workshop. It was great. Met some great people and learned a lot, too—as much from them as from the person leading the class.”
I took seriously my friend’s comment. I thought back to workshops I have attended. There was the Photoshop workshop I attended that was WAY over my head—how did I get through it? By talking with, commiserating with, and figuring things out with my fellow workshop participants. I thought back to my own college and post-college experiences—the discussions with my fellow classmates, the study groups. There was truth in what my friend said—we DO learn from each other. And so, since that day several months ago, I have been thinking and planning, making phone calls, visiting venues and putting together a power point complete with video clips. NOW I am ready to go public! That’s right. This next year I will be launching premarital counseling workshops. Yes, I will still offer counseling on a couple-by-couple basis for those who elect to have premarital counseling, but for those of you who like my friend and like me, like to learn in a group context, that is now possible!
